Following a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends, we are heading to Australia for a teacher exchange in Melbourne. Anticipating and imagining an event or location is sometimes hard to distinguish from reality because in my mind it develops into it's own reality. After 18 hours of travelling with a layover in Chicago, we lost time including new years eve. Nothing was mentioned on the flight but our sweet doll like attendants tended to our every need with care and grace. The only evidence that we were flying over many timezones and that would be entering a new year, was at tray of free Japanese snacks.
Tokyo is one of those places I've dreamed of seeing...and now we are here!
Unlike Kyoto, which is more traditional, historic filed with gardens, palaces and temples, Tokyo is modern and commercial decorated with colourful, childlike characters on every sign. Video game like music with random shouts from sales people like sheep baying are constant sounds you hear. It is exciting! With some pockets of tradition in hidden corners of the city. Respect, honour r and kindness are valued and evident everywhere you go. You bow on your way in, you bow on your way out. You're welcomed as you enter an establishment you're thanked you leave.
Harajuku girls walk the streets of Tokyo
Uni Qlo - one of Bradley's and my favourite department stores - bought 12 quality items for $64!
People are beyond kind...We had the help of a Tokyo Metro attendant open up the ticket tray on the automatic gate to dig out the single tickets that didn't pop back out and he reimbursed us because we thought we bought unlimited day passes. And strangers would stop without our solicitation, to help us with directions.
Temples tucked in unexpected places.
Walking through the wreath beginning of a new year, brings good luck.
